On April 11, 2017, the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan held its regular meeting at Ufa Eye Research Institute.

The meeting was opened by the President of the Academy of Sciences Alfis Gayfuzov. He congratulated the director of Ufa Eye Research Institute, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Professor M. Bikbov on his anniversary and handed him the "Honorary Diploma of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Bashkortostan" for a long and fruitful work. In his speech, he drew the attention of the Presidium members to the fact that nowadays it is important to improve the health of the population of the Republic and improve the quality of life of the citizens. The President of the Academy of Sciences noted that one of the main tasks is the preservation of vision which is successfully solved by ophthalmologists of Ufa Eye Research Institute. Prof. M. Bikbov was also given a testimonial from the Administration of the Head of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

Director of the Ufa Research Institute M. Bikbov addressed the members of the Presidium with a scientific report on the topic "Blindness and hypovision in the Republic of Bashkortostan: the main causes and ways of elimination," in which he outlined the results of the ophthalmological service of the Republic, noting the problems and solutions. Special attention was paid to the scientific component of the work of Ufa Eye Research Institute, the results of which are actively being introduced into the practical activities of the ophthalmologists of the Institute and the Republic. This allows steadily increasing the number of operations with such socially important eye diseases as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration. Thanks to the introduction of new technologies at the Institute, the number of operations for cataracts in 2016 exceeded 14,000, and the target for cataract surgery in the country now stands at 3.5 operations per 1,000 people, while in the Russian Federation it averages 2 operations per 1 thousand of the population.

Members of the Presidium before the meeting had the opportunity to undergo a full diagnostic eye examination on the most modern equipment and receive a medical report and recommendations by the end of the meeting.
